Savannah and Alpine Safaris is owned and operated by Gerhard Lourens.

Gerhard was born in South Africa and was only five years old when he was taken on his very first hunting trip. This is where his love and passion for wildlife and the outdoors started and it was inevitable that a career in a related industry would follow. 

As a qualified professional hunter, Gerhard has more than a decade of experience in hunting countless animals in numerous countries. This includes hunting various species of dangerous game, as well as plains game hunting and bird hunting.

Gerhard has hunted with clients from all over the globe including several African countries, the USA, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, Mongolia and Australia. He is experienced in hunting in challenging conditions and tough circumstances and knows how to get the job done, whatever it takes.

Guiding clients, sharing his knowledge and skills and helping them to get the perfect trophy they’re after, is what makes the job all worth it for him.

Gerhard is currently based on New Zealand’s South Island. Soon after moving to New Zealand, Gerhard eagerly started scouting the local hunting areas and quickly realised the amazing hunting opportunities the country has to offer.

Because hunting in New Zealand is so different from hunting in Africa, Gerhard is now able to offer clients the best of both worlds – the rugged savannahs and bushveld of Africa and the vast and beautiful alpine regions of New Zealand.
